- 1. Always act according to the concept of “data minimization” and avoid giving away too much about yourself.
- 2. Avoid passwords from the dictionary – regardless of language, dialect or jargon.
- 3. Never save or note down your passwords in plain text, either digitally or on paper.
- 4. Regularly check the data privacy settings of your apps, your smartphone and social network sites.
- 5. Make sure that no one is looking over your shoulder when you input your password, and set up a screen lock.
- 6. Make use of special tools to protect your privacy on the Internet.
- 7. Regularly delete your browser history and cookies – immediately, if you have been using a strange computer or a public computer.
- 8. Never publish photos of your credit card, official identification or other important documents on the Internet.
- 9. Delete all data from old computers, hard drives, USB sticks or smartphones before you dispose of or sell them.
- 10. For cloud services, inform yourself about the T&Cs and the data privacy conditions of the provider, e.g. where your data will be stored and whether the provider is allowed to analyze this data.
- 11. Hardly any Internet offer is actually free – you always end up paying with your data.
